<title><![CDATA[Congress Extends COBRA Subsidy.]]></title>
<link><![CDATA[http://www.schwarzberglaw.com/lawalerts/12-23-09.asp]]></link><description><![CDATA[On Monday December 21st, President Obama signed legislation to extend the government’s subsidy of COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) benefits. The subsidies were originally scheduled to expire on December 31, 2009. The extension was part of the annual Fiscal Year 2010 Defense Appropriations Act.

<title><![CDATA[Minimum Wage Increases – July 24, 2009 ]]></title>
<link><![CDATA[http://www.schwarzberglaw.com/lawalerts/06-19-09.asp]]></link><description><![CDATA[The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 established that the minimum wage of American workers would increase by $.70 per hour for three years, for a total increase of $2.10. The increases were to occur every July 24, for the following three years with the first increase taking place on July 24, 2007 when the minimum hourly rate went from $5.15 per hour to $5.85. On July 24, 2008 the minimum wage went from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour and the final increase will take place next month, on July 24, 2009 when the minimum wage will increase from $6.55 to $7.25.]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[ADVOCACY ACTION ALERT - Healthy Families Act Introduced to Congress on May 18, 2009 ]]></title>
<link><![CDATA[http://www.schwarzberglaw.com/lawalerts/06-19-09hfa.asp]]></link><description><![CDATA[The Healthy Families Act, the “Act,” if passed, would require certain employers, who employ 15 or more employees for 20 or more workweeks in a year, to provide a minimum paid sick leave of: (1) seven (7) days annually for those who work at least 30 hours per week; and (2) a prorated annual amount for those who work less than 30 but at least 20 hours a week, or less than 1,500 but at least 1,000 hours per year. Employees may use this paid sick leave for the following reasons:]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Supreme Court Places the Burden Squarely on Plaintiffs]]></title>
<link><![CDATA[http://www.schwarzberglaw.com/lawalerts/06-19-09adea.asp]]></link><description><![CDATA[On June 18, 2009, the Supreme Court handed down an important decision placing the burden on plaintiffs in Age Discrimination cases (“ADEA”). Writing for the Court, Justice Thomas clarified that the ADEA is not subject to the same burden shifting analysis as Title VII.  
  
NOW, an employee has to prove that age was the only reason (not a reason) he or she was fired, demoted or suffered some other work setback.

<title><![CDATA[Chinese drywall - claims of widespread defects remain unsettling]]></title>

Another major consequence of the housing boom gone bust: ramifications from the installation of potentially problematic Chinese drywall. Such drywall became commonplace from about 2004 to 2006, years when builders had to contend with Florida’s seemingly insatiable demand for new construction. The supply was further strained in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, which caused building booms of their own. Chinese imports seemed like an easy fix to meet the demand. ]]></description>
